In 10 Outrun Mode, you have to defeat (overtake) the rival cars that appear in succession.

Once the game starts, a rival appears in front of your car. You can see a blue line beyond the rival car. If you reach that blue line, it means you have got ahead of the rival car, that is, you outran one rival. Then the second rival appears. You try to get ahead of the second in the same way as the first. When you get ahead of all ten rivals, you clear this mode.

There are seven courses you can use in 10 Outrun Mode:
C1 inner circular and C1 outer circular are technical courses.
New Circular left and New Circular Right are like expressways with long straight lines.
Hanshin Expressway loop line has straits and sharp corners.
Wangan and Yokohane lines are long and technical.
Nagoya Speed Ring has banked corners.
Fukuoka Urban Expressway has unique hilly sections.
Hakone is highly technical.

There are ten levels in each course of 10 Outrun Mode. Level 1 can be cleared even with a normal car, but to clear level 10 you will need a fully-tuned car and good driving technique. You can select a level appropriate for your car's tuning or try higher levels.

There are four statuses in 10 Outrun Mode: ‘Not cleared (not played)’, ‘Bronze time cleared’, ‘Silver time cleared’ and ‘Gold time cleared’.
If the status is ‘Not played’ or ‘Not cleared’ (you failed to outrun 10 rivals) nothing changes.
If you outrun 10 rivals, you get ‘Bronze time cleared’ (the color of the level icon changes to bronze) If you outrun 10 rivals in the fastest time, you get ‘Gold time cleared’ (the color of the level icon changes to gold).
Try to complete all courses in Gold time.

The purpose of 10 Outrun Mode is to outrun rivals. Be careful not to hit against a wall or other car before you get close to a rival car. Once you get close to a rival car, watch its driving line carefully. Cross the line well and pull ahead of it. Take extra care not to plough into the back of rival cars. If you do, your car will get slower and the rival car will get faster. As a result, the blue line will move far away. The rival cars have their own personalities, just like in Story Mode. Cars like R200CLUB will push your car against a wall if you cannot avoid it skillfully. So you have to be careful!
